#65 – African Tusker – Lager Beer

Beer Name: Tusker

Manufacturer: East African Breweries

Origin: Kenya, Africa

Company Founded in: 1922

Beer Type: Lager

SRM (Colour): 15

Abv (Alcohol) 5%

IBU (Bitterness): 10

the Beer pours from the Big Yellow Can Featuring The Iconic Logo Of An African Elephant, With The Theme “Together Forever” Printed. Stands Out, No Doubt This Is An African Beer. Coming From A Country, Kenya, Which Is Synonymous Of The Image “Africa”, Adds Intrigue. Tusker Advertising Slogan Is “Baada Ya Kazi ,” Swahili For “After Work.”

On pouring, I get the standard lagery look, creamy white head that looks good on the pour but fizzles out quick. it has a light golden coloured and the look of a regular lager beer.

Tusker smells like the better class of mainstream lager. It’s smells smooth, crisp, and refreshing with no overtly obvious aromas. Up front, Tusker smells like sweet corn with pale, bready malts giving support.

Tusker tastes better, Clean, Slightly Sweet and Finishes Clean But Not Overly Dry, Having Just Enough Touch Of Earthy Hop Notes In The Background To Keep Things Balanced and Just Enough Sweetness

Even for a national lager, the flavor is on the lighter side. It doesn’t have much in the way of funny or uncomforting off-flavors, so that does make this beer drinkable.

I Really Didnt Expect “Out Of The World” Experience From This Beer. It Is Little Above Average Lager Beer, is well crafted and has a mild pleasing taste.

Its Not Going To Scratch A Craft Beer Itch, But It Could Make A Fine Hot Summer Afternoon Session. Give It A Shot!

Special Thanks to Kaushik Shah for remembering and getting this beer for me from Kenya

HISTORY

Interesting fact about East African Breweries, The first beer to be brewed in a factory in Kenya was produced in 1922 in small copper vessels heated by firewood. It was bottled by hand and the first order of ten cases personally delivered to the General Manager of the Stanley Hotel.

Although The Hotel Had Just Been Opened, It Was The Meeting Point For Visiting Presidents And World-Renowned Figures. George Hurst, The White Settler, Who Initiated The Brewing Process, Laid The Ground For The Formation Of East African Breweries Ltd (EABL).

Shortly After The Founder Of Kenya’s East African Breweries Ltd, George Hurst, Was Killed By An Elephant During A Hunting Accident. His Brother Charles, Who Took Charge Of The Company, Decided To Name Their First Ever Lager, Tusker, In Memory Of His Sibling, Since Large, Male Elephants Indigenous To East Africa, Were Called Tuskers.

Apart from its flagship brand, Tusker Lager, the brewery also produce a 5% Tusker Malt Premium Lager, a 4% Tusker Lite, a 4.5% Tusker apple Cider, and a wide range of other beers from its subsidiaries including Serengeti Lager, White Cap Lager and Uganda Waragi (a 40% liquor), to name but a few

  1. My sister requested that I get her a Tusker beer, therefore I have been interested in it. It’s fortunate that I stumbled onto your blog because you mentioned that Tusker tastes better, is a little sweeter, and finishes crisp but not excessively dry. I believe that trying this out would be a terrific idea, so I will look into retailers who can assist me in obtaining one. I appreciate you sharing!
