History
Grupo Modelo was founded in 1925 and is the leader in Mexico in beer production, distribution and marketing with 63.0% of the total (domestic and export) market share. Corona is the best selling beer from Mexico and is one of the top five selling beers worldwide. Outside Mexico, Corona is commonly served with a wedge of lime or lemon in the neck of the bottle to add tartness and flavor. Corona Extra contains barley malt, rice and corn. In Spain, the beer is branded as “Coronita” (literally, little crown).
About the Beer
Clear pale yellow, no head, no retention, no lacing, minimal to no carbonation within the glass and skunky lager smell. Massive amounts of corn filled aroma and it is so horrendous that I had to add a slice of lime which definitely helped me to complete the beer. I then retired to bed fearing that I would have nightmares. One of the biggest over-hyped and worst beers one can get.
Didn’t know whether to rate with or without lime, but then I realized that it really didn’t matter. But here is the reason why Corona loses everything, Unlike many other beers, Corona is bottled in a clear bottle which increases the opportunity for the beer going flat. Exposure to sunlight or light from fluorescent bulbs such as those used in refrigerated display cases significantly damages the taste of beer, yielding a taste that is often described as “skunky”. This is the result of the essential hop oils spoiling due to UV exposure.
Overall, Corona is something you should only drink when dying of thirst. Even then, maybe you should just forgo it and die with dignity.
