#38 – Sharp’s Doom Bar Beer – Amber Ale

Beer Name : DoomBar,
Manufacturer : Sharp’s,
Origin : Cornwall, UK,
Company founded in : 1994,
Beer Type : Amber Ale / English Ale,
SRM : 20,
Abv : 4.3%,
IBU : 15,

About the Beer:
It is apparently one of the most popular bitters in the UK. Pours a deep, slightly hazed bronze colour with minimal head that disappears quickly and does not adhere to the glass.
The aroma is of light mix of malts, toffee and fruity. Not really much depth to this one but it’s not offensive either. It tastes of malts to begin with a little spice, a hint of caramel, some fruit and a little biscuity in there too. Again the taste is pretty basic and very much like a typical English bitter. Finish is smooth and slightly sweet with the a touch of spice. The carbonation levels are low and slightly on the dry side.

Overall it is a moderate beer in all directions and there is nothing that draws attention to this, other than it’s inherent mellowness. There are much smoother/mellower English Amber ales. I feel that this Beer lacks any defining bitterness or maltiness, then it might have succeeded.
Listed in the “1001 Beers to Taste Before You Die”. May be for the hype.

Note: Special Thanks to Craig Conway for getting me this Beer from the UK.

My Own Rating:

History of the Brewery:
Sharp’s Brewery is a British regional brewery company founded in 1994 in St Minver Lowlands, Rock, Cornwall by Bill Sharp. It is best known for its flagship ale “Doom Bar”, Which is named after the notoriously perilous sandbank in North Cornwall. Unlike many breweries, they do not own or operate any public houses, hotels or restaurants. Their focus is solely on brewing beers.
Doom Bar bitter (4.3% abv), the Brewery’s flagship ale, accounts for nearly 90% of sales. It was awarded an International Beer challenge “World Top 50 Beers” in 2006 and a bronze award in 2011 and 2012. In 2010 it won a bronze in the Publican Licencees Choice Awards. It also received a “Taste of the West” bronze award in 2013 along with the Brussels Beer Challenge (Pale and Amber Ale : Bitter) and PMA Publican’s Choice Award for National Cask Ale brand.
