About the Beer
This is one of the best beers ever brewed. Chimay’s “Blue Grande Réserve” pours into chalice a dark burgundy, hazy brownish color and has a ton of fine carbonation. The body has a beautiful deep dark brown color with dark ruby highlights and is slightly hazy.
The head builds up tall and thick with an abundance of small tiny tight packed bubbles. It has a creamy off white color and good retention as it slowly settles down to a light thin covering. Lacing is very slick and minimal
It’s loaded with rich caramel aromas and flavors with supporting notes of spices, dried cherry, plums, raisins and chocolates. Just like a Christmas holiday fruit cake.
This beer is velvety smooth with medium to full body and a slight alcohol warmth which is mostly well hidden.
The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with superb balance and little warmth despite the beer’s significant alcohol, making it sinfully easy to drink. Lingering sweet-spice and chocolate notes grace the long finish.
Chimay Grande Réserve is an “Authentic Trappist Product” and is one of the classical examples of the style. It demands lot of respect and if you have never had this beer, make it your next goal to try this legend.
