About the Beer:
First impression was WOW, 1 Liter Can filled with history of monastic brew. Possibly one of its kind as I never saw  a 1 Liter Beer Can before.

Pours pale gold in color, cloudy pearly with one finger of dense white head, excellent retention with moderate patchy lacing and it is a decent looking beer.  Aromas of clove, wheat, honey, ripe banana and rounded off by very subtle vanilla on the back.

On the first sip, it tastes exactly like its aromas and is followed by floral bitterness. Medium body with lively carbonation. After taste of sweet maltiness, subtle citric & spicy touch linger into a sweet finish.

The aftertaste also leaves something to be desired. I would say that the wheat-beer flavor is decent and appearance in a glass looks great. Unfortunately, I’ll just have to go with a decent rating for this beer as opposed to good or great, as it is not that flavorful as compared to other hefes.

Certainly drinkable, though not to the extent you’d hope for in a beer sold by the liter.

My Own Rating:
Aroma : 7/10
Appearance : 7/10
Taste : 6/10
Palate : 6/10
Overall : 6.5/10

History of the Brewery:
The Brauerei Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral Brewery) is a brewery located in Gaustadt, a suburb of Bamberg, Germany.

Beer has a long tradition in Bamberg. The first written mention goes back to the year 1039. The first official brewing right was awarded in 1122 by Bishop Otto I (1102-39) to the Benedictine monastery on Michelsberg.

In 1489, the sovereigns were concerned about the quality of the beer. So prince-bishop Heinrich lll. Groß von Trockau (1487-1501) enforced the Bamberg Purity Law which stated that “nothing could be better than hops, malt and water” at “Einsiedeln” – and thus this Law came into force 27 years earlier!

Bamberg made its ascent as a beer city in the 18th century. This was during Schönborn period under the prince-bishop Lothar Franz (1693-1729) and Friedrich Karl (1729-1746). In Schönborn trade and crafts were strongly promoted and it broke out like an economic miracle.

In the course of these flourishing years, the brewery was founded in 1718 and is noted in the minutes of the monastery Michelsberg from 1718. At this time there were three public houses in the village of Gaustadt, with only 300 inhabitants. One of these public houses belonged to the Benedictine Monastery St. Michelsberg of Bamberg, and for this public house, Georg Morg, the tenant at that time was granted permission to establish a brewery.

Since 1910, it has been managed by the Wörner family. In 1953, they brewed 6,000 hectoliters. The production today is about 250,000 hectolitres. It is the biggest brewery in Bamberg.
