History
The Japan Brewery Company Limited which is the forerunner of Kirin Brewery, was established in 1885. Kirin Brewery sells two of the most popular beers in Japan, i.e, “Kirin Lager” which is one of the Country’s oldest beer brands which started brewing since 1888 and “Ichiban Shibori”.
In Japan “Kirin” refers to Giraffes or to Qilin, the mythical hooved Chinese chimerical creature. Ichiban means ‘number one’ according to official site of Kirin. Since 1990, this Japanese malt has made a name for itself around the world. Kirin Ichiban is brewed using a unique process called Ichiban Shibori, or “First Press” means all the wort used to brew the beer comes from the initial run-off from the mash i.e, none of the subsequent “sparge” water goes into the beer. The idea is to use only the purest extract from the barley. Wort derived from the sparge contain less of the good sugars and more bitter tannin from the husks of the grains. In Theory the “First Press” technique creates a brew with more alcohol, a milder flavour and a fuller body.
Although brewing and related business remain the core of Kirin’s activities, the company is also in several other diversified sectors like Soft drink, Logistics, Engineering, Restaurants, Real Estate, Nutrient Food, Agribio, Food and Health.
About the Beer:
The Pour leaves a small head of foam that disappears quickly to reveal a pale golden colour beneath, much like a Pilsners of Germany and the Czech Republic. The aroma is pleasant with a mild malt scent. It is not too strong but also not subdues by any means. It promotes a feeling of relaxation and with pleasant taste that doesn’t stick around for too long. This isn’t surprising given the fact that Ichiban is brewed using the same noble European hop varieties. You aren’t overwhelmed by unnecessary flavours and it doesn’t dissipate too quickly. However, the beer finishes a little sweeter with a little less hop flavour. Overall, It is a good clean, simple, crisp and smooth beer. Recommended for someone who is looking for a nice light beer to relax with.
Note: Special Thanks to Parag Kulkarni for getting this Beer for me from HongKong.
