Wychwood Brewery is a brewery based in Witney, founded in 1983.
A Goblin is a legendary evil or mischievous grotesque dwarf-like demon or monster that appeared in European stories and folklore during the Middle Ages. The company’s flagship brand is Hobgoblin, a 5.2% abv brown ale, described by Wychwood as a “Ruby beer” and is United Kingdom’s largest brewer of organic ales.
Interestingly during a meeting at the 2010 G-20 Toronto summit, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and USA President Barack Obama presented each other bottles of beer from their respective home towns/cities. Cameron presented Obama with twelve bottles of Hobgoblin, which is brewed in his Witney constituency and in return Obama gave David 24 bottles of Goose Island beer from Goose Island Brewery.
Luckily I have tasted both the beers and reviewed them.
About the Beer:
A traditional, old-fashioned bottle shape with majestic, fantasy-themed artwork combined with beautiful typography which suits the aesthetic of the brew within. When poured into glass, the brew is a very dark and burnt red. Full bodied with a nice soft fluffy head leaving minimal lacing on the glass.Aromas emanated of caramel, chocolate, toffee and roasted malts. I took a sip with great expectations after inhaling the intoxicating aromas. The mouthfeel of the beer is magnificent and the first thing that hits your palate is a chocolate toffee malt flavor, moderate bitterness & a disctinctive fruity character with ruby red glow. The bitterness of the hops come through in the end to give you a clean finish.
The explosion of taste and heaviness of flavour is a definite sign that you’re drinking a true brew.
