History:
Gulden Draak (Dutch for Golden Dragon) is a dark Belgian beer with high alcohol by volume (10.5%), brewed by Brouwerij Van Steenberge in Ertvelde, East Flanders. It is named after the golden dragon at the top of the belfry in Ghent. The history of the brewery goes back to 1784 where many hundreds of home breweries in Flanders made their own beer for their own consumption. The brewery was passed onto multiple generations and in 1982 Van Steenberge launched Gulden Draak Beer in the market.
Gulden Draak was awarded the best-tasting beer in the world in 1998 by the American Tasting Institute (now ChefsBest).
About the Beer:
Pours rich translucent reddish brown in colour with caramel-coloured foam head and the full body with persistent carbonation. There is a powerful fragrance of barley, ripe plums, coffee and cherries. Tastes natural malt toffee-like sweetness with a mellow hoppiness. The finishing is sweetish dry in aftertaste that lasts for a good time. It is brewed with caramel malt and high secondary fermentation with Bordeaux wine yeast. It is a beer that you can actually imbibe to adventure the complex taste.
This is a dark triple, which in itself makes it an exceptional beer.
