History
The Tsingtao Brewery was founded by The Anglo-German Brewery Co. Ltd., an English-German joint stock company based in Hong Kong who owned it until 1916. The brewery was founded on August 15, 1903 as the Germania-Brauerei and now claims about 15% of domestic Chinese market share. The first beer was served on December 22, 1904 and the beer’s present-day logo displays an image of Zhan Qiao, a famous pier on Qingdao’s southern shore.
Tsingtao Beer won the Gold Medal on the Munich International Exposition in 1906, just two years after the brewery was newly built. Originally, Tsingtao Beer was brewed in accordance with the German Reinheitsgebot (‘Purity Law’) of 1516, therefore the only ingredients used were water, barley, and hops. However, after privatization the recipe WAS changed. Like many other beers BREWED in China, Tsingtao Beer contains a proportion of the less-expensive rice as an adjunct in the mash.
Tsingtao was first imported to the U.S. in 1972 and became the top-selling Chinese beer in the U.S. market. In the same year, Tsingtao was ranked the 6th largest brewery in the world based on total sales volume by The Barth Report.
In 1993, Tsingtao Brewery became the first-ever Chinese company to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. That same year Tsingtao was also listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Today, Tsingtao Beer China has a total of 69 breweries all over China and is exported to more than 90 countries.

About the Beer
Pours clear with a slim head of white foam that falls fast. No bubbles rise after the initial flourish. Head fades to some loose bubbles and a film. Nose is pleasant and surprisingly strong with grainy notes. The taste is sweet with flavors of corn, rice, a little malt and a faint touch of hops. It’s very ordinary in every way. The aftertaste leaves me wanting to get something else to drink. If you ever manage to find this Beer, then please keep it back and instead buy a Mineral Water.
Overall, The Tsingtao was disappointing and it’s pretty much what I expected out of a Chinese beer. But I wanted a cultural experience and will always try a new beer so I don’t miss out on anything. I didn’t find it tasty at all and had a hard time finishing it. It is the 2nd largest selling Beer in China, but I can’t imagine why?
The famous Beer author Michael Jackson’s Book on 500 Worlds Classic Beers did not review Tsingtao because he knew what he was doing.
My Own Rating:
